On October 14, Dan Zelikman of StarrTech Interactive along with Michael Ni and Nathan Kam of McNeil Wilson Communications led a “Social Media Workshop” sponsored by UH PRSSA. The said, guest speakers went over the importance of social media and personal branding.
Social media was described as the next chapter in the book of communications. It is a new and innovative way to communicate. Social media is a new way to pitch to clients and reach new clients as well. It is also a new way to establish a relationship and bond with clients. Although engaging in social media takes too much time, the tools can be utilized to make your workday more efficient. If the tools and applications are used right, they feed into one another. However, you must find reasoning behind what you want to do and how you want to use such applications. You do not want to spread yourself too thin.
Another topic the guest speakers went over was personal branding. Personal branding is who you are. It is basically a reflection of you and how you want to be known. The way you set your page up, your style, your username on Linked-In, Facebook, MySpace, or Twitter must all be consistent for clients to find you easier. The important thing about personal branding is to keep yourself transparent and humanize your brand. To help promote the company you work for, you must be an extension of it for others to get to know the company through you. What you want the people to know about you all lies in your hands.

i. Ragan Report
ii. Corporate vs. Agency
iii. Quick Tips for Job Interviews
• Resume is important, but not end all
o Don’t always get a job because of your resume
• Resume is more important if you don’t know anyone at your company
• Need to be better than the next applicant to be hired
• Most resumes get sent to the HR dept. (unless you know someone)
o HR looks at relevance of your experience
o Your resume does not need to be long (longer doesn’t mean better)
• Volunteering is a good way to get experience for your resume (non-profit)
• Important to maintain contacts
• Academics are important, but companies look at other things as well
• You really need to make an impression on the 1st page
• Relevant job experience is very important
• Important to understand corporate environment
o Companies hire people depending on if they will get along w/others in the company
• To be hired:
o Job skills
o Personality/attitude
o Really want to learn
o Able to fit in company
• Resume should tell company what you can do for them
• It’s important for you to research company before you get there
• You get hired by how you stack up against your competitors
• In applying for a position in other locations, it is even more important to stand out because companies don’t want to invest time and money on someone who is going to leave in a short time
• Stafford prefers applicants to list work experience in order of relevance rather than currency (chronological)
• After interview, it’s important to ask questions relevant to job (when you are asked if there are any questions)
o Know about company and company’s clients
• Bring a portfolio to interviews (if you have one)
• Cover letters need to fit the position
o Don’t do generic cover letter (tailor letter to company)
o Not too long and to the point!
• Normal process for sending resume via email
o Don’t use fancy fonts – may not translate on company’s computer
• Companies may google possible employees, so sensor what you put up on the Internet – > Digital Dirt
• Also be careful what you blog on (i.e. work experience)
